Why are fosterers so important?
Becoming a foster carer means that you are providing invaluable support for unwanted dogs who need a second chance with a new and loving family.
Housing dogs in foster homes offers so many advantages over kennels. It provides them with regular companionship which is an essential part of rehabilitation for emotionally traumatised dogs. The fostering route allows us to support each dog’s individual needs as we will be able to assess their true behaviour when placed in a domestic environment and in turn be able to find them the correct and best forever home. Each fosterer will benefit from extensive and bespoke training for each dog and ongoing support including funding for all veterinary costs, quality dog food and on-site facilities.

Who can become a fosterer?
As the dogs that pass through our foster scheme can often have quite complex needs, it is beneficial that foster carers have had experience with dog ownership. However, it is not essential – a willingness to follow our advice and guidance is the most important thing. We are looking for a variety of homes for our dogs.
It is essential that each fosterer should have an enclosed and safe garden. They should also be able to commit the necessary time needed to support the dog.
Each potential fosterer and their circumstances will be vetted individually.
We do ask that our foster carers:
- Commit to the fostering process until the animal is rehomed, which may require a commitment of many months in some cases.
- Assist us with the rehoming process by regularly providing photos, videos and updates via email.
- Be prepared to take dogs to vet appointments if required and attend the St Francis site weekly for training sessions.
All our foster carers need to be compassionate, empathetic and adaptable to the needs of the individual dogs that come through their care, as they are all unique. You must be willing to provide all the basics of care, such as feeding, cleaning, exercising, grooming, training, playing and socialising, and be willing to follow our guidance and regulations on training and safety.
There is a selection process for all potential fosterers and we hope to match you with a dog as soon as possible however please be aware that this may take time.
