Hi, My Name is Rufus

I am a loving, affectionate, and characterful Jack Russell x Staffy with plenty of energy and personality. I can be nervous and easily overstimulated, and when I become frustrated I can struggle to manage my emotions. I’m looking for a patient home that will help me build my confidence and give me appropriate outlets for my terrier energy.
Like many terriers, I have a busy mind and will benefit from plenty of enrichment, training, scent work, and terrier-type activities. With the right support, I can learn to manage my frustration and channel my energy.

Children: School-aged children that are used to dogs
Dogs: To be the only dog in the home (No other resident dogs) to help ease overwhelm. Could possibly live with a tolerant calm dog in the future.
Cats/Small Animals: No cats or small animals due to terrier prey drive

Home Alone Time
Comfortable being left: Comfortable being left: Yes have previously been left a full working day. This may need to be built up gradually during my settling-in period. He currently lives with another dog, so being left alone in a new home may be a big change for him.
My new family should be prepared to introduce alone time gradually and positively while I settle into my new routine.

Car Travel: Good
Recall: Needs more training
Housetrained: Yes
Lead Walking: Rufus needs further lead-walking training. When he becomes frustrated on the lead, he can jump up and bite at the lead. This is something his new owners will need to work on with him using positive, reward-based training. We can show his new family the techniques we use with him and help them continue this training at home. Helping him recognise and manage these feelings will be an important part of his ongoing training.
Rufus will benefit from an experienced owner who can recognise the early signs of frustration and give him appropriate outlets before he becomes overwhelmed. Consistent, reward-based training will help him learn alternative behaviours and build his confidence.

Exercise and Lifestyle
Exercise Requirements: Moderate-High
Daily Exercise Needs: Rufus needs regular physical exercise combined with mental stimulation, enrichment, training, and opportunities to use his natural terrier instincts.
Providing him with appropriate activities will help keep his busy mind occupied and give him positive outlets for his energy and frustration.

Public Places
Comfortable in Public Places (e.g. cafés, pubs, shops, town centres): Rufus can become overwhelmed and frustrated in busy or unfamiliar environments.
He would benefit from being introduced to new places gradually and from having his environment managed carefully. Quieter locations will allow him to build confidence without becoming overwhelmed.

Rufus is not currently neutered, and up to date with his vaccinations, flea and worming treatments.

Rufus is looking for a patient and understanding home that will give him the time and support he needs to build his confidence and learn to manage his frustration.
His new family will need to continue working on his lead walking and recall using kind, positive, reward-based training. In particular, his tendency to jump up and bite the lead when frustrated will need ongoing work, and we will be able to show his new owners how we manage and train this behaviour.
He will also benefit greatly from plenty of terrier-type activities, scent work, enrichment, and training to give him positive outlets for his energy and natural instincts.
With the right guidance, patience, and understanding, Rufus can continue to build his confidence and learn better ways of managing his frustration. In return, he will bring plenty of affection, loyalty, fun, and terrier character to his new family.
